Holistic Nutrition: Why Would I Want to do a Cleanse?

Our bodies naturally detoxify daily.  So why would you want to do a dietary cleanse?  Way back at the beginning or our existence our bodies could handle many of the toxins that we ingested or breathed.  Our world has changed.  In recent history mankind has managed to drastically change the chemistry of our environment.  In 1996 alone, ( more than a decade ago…) more than 418,000,000 pounds of chemicals were released in to the ground threatening our soil and some or our natural water supplies.  More than 45,000,000 pounds of chemical waste were dumped into lakes and rivers and more than 1,000,000,000 pounds of chemical emissions were pumped into the air we breathe. That has significantly increased since then.  Add to this the quality of our food.  Many of our foods have been refined away of their nutritional value and have artificial colorings, preservatives, flavorings along with extensive use of antibiotics in medicine in humans and animals we eat, and agriculture. We have created an ‘internal’ pollution. Toxins enter our body from the environment which negatively impact our overall health.

We may not even be aware that the sluggishness, brain fog, intestinal distress could be caused by an internal toxic environment.  The toxins are in our cells- mostly fat cells where toxins love to reside.  This extra load  creates an excessive burden on the liver and kidneys.

What to do about this?  Incorporate a yearly or bi-yearly safe cleanse.  The Clear Change Program, by Metagenics, is one of them;  a 10-day program you eat real food, follow a prescribed plan with a super nutritional drink to support the liver to eliminate toxins. you will not be hungry.  (Personally, I have done this program many times and always felt great.)  Water or juice fasts have been shown not to be the preferred way to detoxify.  It is very stressful for the body and may weaken muscles and various organs because of protein losses and reduced metabolic energy.

Other ways are to avoid processed foods, drink a lot of purified water, eat organic fruits and veggies, decrease animal protein and when eaten it should be organic and grass fed. Decrease sugar, food colorings, chemicals and additives from the foods you eat and drink.  It takes a lot of vitamins and minerals to detoxify the body- greens, greens, greens, fruits and legumes are a great way to get them.  Eliminating sodas, alcohol, candies and switching to more natural foods will be like a ‘mini’ detox.  Change your household cleaners to a more natural approach, drink filtered water, get rid of harmful insecticides, check your personal soaps and shampoos and chose those with no added chemicals, even your body lotions.  Your skin is your largest organ and biggest detoxifier.

Think of all the years you have been ingesting toxins.  Unless you can support your body with a way to get rid of them, they are going to stick with you.  Toxins cause disease. It is your choice, do a quality cleanse or start eliminating foods, chemicals etc. and replace with cleaner choices.
