Each day 5,200 Americans receive the message, “You have Type 2 Diabetes”. This means 1.9 million new cases added to the already stunning 33 million cases of diabetes. Add the 80 million Americans who are pre-diabetic and you have a health crisis that could bankrupt our healthcare system.

As staggering as these numbers are, it gets worse. The rate of new cases is expected to double over the next 10 years.

After being diagnosed, diabetes exacts a huge emotional and physical toll. There are new priorities, demands, fears and realities. The diabetic life can be overwhelming and depressing. It is filled with doctor appointments, constantly monitoring blood sugars and medications and the fear of spin-off diseases.

The financial burden can be just as devastating. At a minimum, diabetes costs $6,000 per year out of pocket for an individual. In the worst cases, it can result in bankruptcy and financial ruin.

Diabetes is Common, Deadly and Disabling:

  • 33 million Americans suffer from diabetes, while another 80 million people suffer from pre-diabetes.
  • Diabetes costs $175 Billion dollars per year. That’s about as much as was spent in 2009 on the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and the global war on terrorism combined.
  • Diabetes is one of the biggest health expenses facing employers, costing $22.6 billion annually in worker absenteeism and reduced productivity.
  • If current trends continue, 50% of Americans will develop diabetes or pre-diabetes sometime in their lifetime and will lose, on average, 10–15 years of life.
  • Diabetes is the number 1 cause of spin-off diseases including: heart disease, stroke, blindness, non-traumatic amputations, kidney failure, neuropathy and Alzheimer’s.
